People used to say that a firm handshake said a lot about your character but with the world currently moving at the speed of petabytes, what should we say now? “I can tell he’s a good guy because of the way that he uses his bold letters.”
Don’t get me wrong, I think services like Facebook, Google+ and Twitter help us all connect on a level that we have never been able to connect before. We can share, we can talk, we can collaborate and we can get instant feedback on something that we’re working on from someone half way around the world and that in itself is amazing. Technology is even giving me, with my bold letters and all, a tiny voice outside of my regular circle of friends. The problem I see is that it seems that many younger people hide behind technology and used it as a their only source of contact. Its the be all end all. Outside of their cyberworld they freeze up or make a situation awkward because they have to speak in more than 140 characters or even…*gasp* complete sentences! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
The bottom line is that I strongly believe that technology shouldn’t be used as a crutch or a replacement for common social skills. Technology should be used as a stepping stone for the core basis of our civilization… human interaction.
