My friend, Anitza, works for the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA and she bought us tickets to go on a whale watching excursion! I was excited because I love being out in the ocean where it’s calm and quiet. I had gone out fishing before never actually looking for whales. The afternoon was a bit cloudy but once everyone was on-board we set sail.
The whole trip took about 3.5 hours and during that time we saw sea lions, (a lot) of birds, dolphins and of course a couple of (what I believe were) gray whales. Although the whales would come up to breathe every few minutes, I never got a shot that didn’t look like a bunch of water with a tiny island of whale popping out. In their own way, those pictures are exciting to me because I had never been that close to a living whale in the wild before but they’re still a little hard to see. My quest for a whale fluke continues.
Once I’m done sorting through all of yesterday’s pictures I will upload them into their own gallery but for as far as ‘Day 18’ is concerned, I thought I would share the picture of this seagull as it was flying parallel to our boat shortly after we started our trip.
